Is ever religion based off the atmosphere and culture of the time it was created?

The Quran reads like a science fiction novel when you read it. Gods riding around in their "flying carpets" shooting each other with "fiery arrows". Kinda sounds like a aerial battle between beings that were able to fly at the time which made them seem like Gods to humans which im sure they weren't but just intelligent beings from another planet.
