How long before a dance should you ask someone?

My school is having a a sadie hawkins dance the weekend before valentine's day. The guy I want to ask is involved in a lot of different things so I want to make sure there's enough notice for him to plan around it and I want to make sure no one else asks.. But I don't want to ask too early
